Traveling With Friends: A Must-Do
Recently, my friend shared a picture on Facebook of the clock tower in Prague (see picture below). It is 600 years old and is the world's oldest astronomical clock still in operation. And it is beautiful! Seeing this picture made me reminisce about my trip to Prague (way back) in 2008. This was one of the best trips I have ever gone on! We traveled to several cities during this trip: Munich, Germany; Vienna, Austria; and Prague, Czech Republic. We were lucky enough to be able to sing in a variety of venues in each city and I vividly remember so many things about each place. I am not the best with remembering things so upon reminiscing I had to ask myself: what made this trip to memorable? The answer? Being able to experience everything with my friends!
My friends made each place so much fun and I believe it is because each of my friends brought something unique to the "table." My friend Daniel is hilarious and was always able to make us laugh. Aaron knew a ton of stuff about beer (um, hello - we were in GERMANY so this came in handy). Melissa totally understood my need for organization on the trip and also took some pictures of our group I really love. I also got to have Matt (my husband) there with me which made some parts of the trip romantic. And there were so many others that made this trip unique and full of fun and laughter! There are so many pictures of our group laughing that I feel like it is what we did the entire time. There wasn't a time I can remember where I felt anything other than happy.
We got to experience making music together and sharing that beautiful music with the people of Europe. We got to sight-see together and try new foods for the first time together (wiener schnitzel is GOOD!!). And one of the best things about them being there with me was that I had familiar people around me so I didn't ever feel too scared or shy to do things or talk to the locals. We did these things together. At the end of the trip, each of us had a different favorite city or favorite experience, but being together made the entire trip amazing for every one of us.
[[Sidenote: I was lucky enough to be able to go on another trip with friends to New York City to sing in Carnegie Hall. This included a lot of the same friends and some new wonderful ones and that trip was amazing, too. Seriously, friends make everything awesome.]]
If you get the opportunity to travel with a group of friends - TAKE IT! It doesn't even really matter where you go - the beach; the mountains; another country - you will not regret it one bit. Traveling with friends is a must-do, bucket-list item!
Now, exactly 11 years later, we are all living in different places. We all have our own lives with spouses, children, and jobs. But I know that we can all look back on that trip with fondness and joy. And I am so lucky to have been able to travel, make music, and experience new places with my good friends. Eleanor Roseevelt said "Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart." These friends of mine may be far away, but they - and this trip - will always be a part of my heart. Thank you, friends.
